Racially Motivated Hate Crime in Chicago?
On Wednesday, four African-Americans in Chicago abducted, bound, and tortured a white man, streaming the process live on Facebook. The reason? He is white and voted for Donald Trump. Questions to rather this is or isn’t a Hate Crime are already floating through the media and internet.
The video showed the victim being kicked, getting his scalp cut, and having his mouth covered with tape. All the while, they shouted phrases such as “F*** Trump!” and “F*** White People!” Furthermore, the victim is reported as being 18 years-old and special-needs. He was wandering Chicago in a state of personal “crisis” when he was abducted.
Hate Crime charges are under consideration. However, the Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin states that:
“Although they are adults, they’re 18. Kids make stupid decisions — I shouldn’t call them kids; they’re legally adults, but they’re young adults, and they make stupid decisions. That certainly will be part of whether or not … we seek a hate crime, to determine whether or not this is sincere or just stupid ranting and raving.”
He also mentioned that he did not believe the attacks to be politically motivated.
This statement is laughable. Imagine the situation reversed. Think about the consequences of four white men assaulting a handicapped African-American because he of who he voted for in the election. The coverage would be massive. And the absolute certain part? There would be no doubting the crime was indeed racially motivated. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, it would be classified as a hate crime.
However, despite the insultingly obvious double-standards, there lies a real heart to this issue. A man was tortured for his skin color and beliefs in America. No matter your feelings on Trump, politics, or privilege, the problem here is obvious: In the Land of the Free, it isn’t always safe to speak your mind. America today is deeply divided.
